Nargenfestival Opening Concert

Einojuhani Rautavaara – Cantus Arcticus, op. 61. Concert for birds and orchestra
Joseph Haydn – Scena di Berenice, H.XVIIa:10
Gustav Mahler – Symphony nr 1 in D major

Maria Valdmaa (soprano)
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Conductor Tõnu Kaljuste

The opening concert of the 10th Nargenfestival summer season takes the listeners to the diverse themes of nature and love in the music of three centuries.

„Cantus Arcticus“, probably one of the most famous works of the Finnish living classic composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, will sound  under Tõnu Kaljuste's conduction as the concert's opening piece accompanied by the recorded birdsong from nearby Arctic Circle and northern Finnish marshes.

Already renowned from previous Nargenfestival seasons Maria Valdma will perform the soprano aria of the 18th century classic Joseph Haydn about miserable love.

The second part of the concert will be dominated by bright nature images, lyrical sounds and even more than that in the earliest symphony of Gustav Mahler, the greatest symphonist of the late 19th century Romanticism.

In Haapsalu it is again time to think about Cyrillus Kreek, especially with his 125th birth anniversary celebrated in December.

This year's interpretation of Cyrillus Kreek's works is performed by ensemble Vox Clamantis with the programme of liturgy music and several David's Songs in addition to folk chorals arranged by the composer.

The audience will enjoy Marco Ambrosini's nyckelharpa and Anna-Liisa Eller's kannel improvisations interlaced between the songs.

Arrangements of spiritual folk melodies by Cyrillus Kreek
Pärt Uusberg – Evening beauty

Chamber choir Head Ööd, Vend
Nargenfestival orchestra
Conductor Kaspar Mänd

Cyrillus Kreek's Days continue in the beauty of the evening accompanied by the music for a mixed choir and strings orchestra led by the young Estonian National Opera conductor Kaspar Mänd.

Together with Cyrillus Kreek's arrangements of folk melodies will sound creations of other composers in whose works Estonian folk melodies have an important place.

Tõnu Kõrvits's strings orchestra work 'Thule elegies' as well as the title creation of the concert -  Pärt Uusberg's 'Evening beauty' for mixed choir, ensemble and strings orchestra - are both inspired by folk melodies.

Nargenfestival and Von Krahl Theatre present: premier of a musical incantation NATIVITY WORDS

Director: Peeter Jalakas
Musical Director: Tõnu Kaljuste
Music author: Veljo Tormis
Arrangements: Tõnu Kõrvits
Textile artist: Kärt Ojavee
Sculptor: Edith Karlson
Video artists: Emer Värk ja Mikk-Mait Kivi
Technical solutions: Enar Tarmo

Production: Von Krahl Theatre and Nargenfestival in cooperation with Estonian Concert and Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

On the stage: Estonian National Male Choir, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Reigo Ahven and Viljandi Drumlab, rune singer Ilona Korhonen (Finland) ja Von Krahl Theatre actors.

Conductor Tõnu Kaljuste and director Peeter Jalakas continue the cycle of grand pieces based on the music of Veljo Tormis with the joint musical production of 'Nativity Words' by Von Krahl Theatre, Nargen Opera and Nargenfestival.

'Nativity Words' has been created as the beginning of the mythical time cycle which at the same time marks its closing with the memorable for the audience and Estonian culture history 'Estonian ballads'(2004), 'Estonian women's songs'(2006) and 'Estonian men's songs'(2008) as the background.

Nativity Words blends archaic mind patterns with technologically digital treatment of the world, synthesizes mythology and futurism and reconciles sacral perception with the spirit of idealizing  the contemporary world's novelty.

The production retains the rustic content but dresses Veljo Tormis up in digital creased trousers and has him to sit in the yet uninvented vessel.

The performance rows through such works of Veljo Tormis as 'Creation of the World' from Izhorian epic, cantata 'Nativity Words', 'Kalevala's 17th rune song', 'Said Lembitu', Etude with Juhan Viiding. 'They sing on the ship'

The production is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Veljo Tormis.

Tickets are on sale in Von Krahl ticket selling system www.vonkrahl.ee/piletid and Von Krahl Cafe (Rataskaevu Street 10, Tallinn) from 4 May 2015.

Arvo Pärt Days. ALBUMS: Opening of CD installation ALBUMS

Authors of the installation Mari Kaljuste ja Mari Kurismaa

Arvo Pärt Days 2015
28 August – 26 September 2015

ALBUMS

TALLINN-TARTU-PAIDE-RAKVERE-RIIA

In 1984 ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) released the first Arvo Pärt's author album 'Tabula Rasa' which initiated the 'ECM New Series' focusing on new Western classical music.

Manfred Eicher's inspiration for the disc and the whole following series came from an incidental listening to the album's title work on the car radio which left a him a deep and long lasting impression. The 14 albums were the fruit of Eicher and Pärt's creative cooperation based on a rare deep intuitive understanding of each other. The series of Manfred Eicher's company includes all record debuts of Arvo Pärt's most significant works that during more than 30 years have found acclaim as well as numerous listeners all over the world.

In the year of  Arvo Pärt's 80th anniversary Nargenfestival's programme of  Arvo Pärt's Days concentrates on „ECM New Series“ recordings. The music of all ECM Arvo Pärt's author discs and also pieces which are yet being prepared for recording will sound at the concerts taking place from 2th September to 26th September. This year's Arvo Pärt's Days celebrating the anniversary will – in addition to Tallinn - take place in Tartu, Paide, Rakvere and for the first time in Latvia's capital Riga.

In the year of  Arvo Pärt's 80th anniversary Nargenfestival's Arvo Pärt's Days programme concentrates on „ECM New Series“ discs. It is a series focusing on Western classical music, the inspiration for which the producer Manfred Eicher got from his first incidental listening to 'Tabula rasa' on the car radio which left him a deep and long lasting impression. The first Arvo Pärt's author album 'Tabula rasa' was released in 1984.

The series of Manfred Eicher's company includes all first recordings of Arvo Pärt's most significant works that during more than 30 years have found acclaim as well as numerous listeners all over the world. However, 'Tabula rasa' has remained one of the most required among the other recordings.

'Tabula rasa' was voted the best Estonian classical music disc of all times by experts and amateurs in the poll organised by the Estonian classical radio station Klassikaraadio.

Another of the most beloved albums of the New Series  - 'Alina' - contains the two well-known and most performed chamber works from the first years of  tintinnabuli style.

The 10th recording of ECM Arvo Pärt's albums 'Orient & Occident' was nominated for Grammy's best classical album and best classical contemporary composition awards, placed among the best recordings of the month by the editors of a prominent music magazine Gramophone and given the best contemporary music award at the Classic Brit Award ceremony.

The opening concert of Nargenfestival will be the performance of the works from these three highly acclaimed discs.

Created in 1989 'Miserere' is one of the most dramatic and contrast-rich among  other Arvo Pärt's  tintinnabuli style pieces, at the same time certainly being the central work of the disc and of all the composer's works in general.

The Hilliard Ensemble played an essential role in the performance practice of the work and according to  Arvo Pärt's words without  their perfect interpretation and pure sound there wouldn't be any 'Miserere'.

Therefore it is very significant that the concert introducing this disc is conducted by Paul Hillier, one of the founders and ex-members of the Hilliard Ensemble.

The ECM album was nominated for Grammy's best classical contemporary composition award.

Nargenfestival celebrates  Arvo Pärt's birthday in Paide, the composer's birthplace, with the performance of the works from his first author ECM disc 'Tabula Rasa' (1984) which started the ECM New Series focusing on new Western classical music.

Manfred Eicher's inspiration for the recording and the whole following series came from an incidental listening to the disc's title piece on the car radio, which left him a deep and long lasting impression.

Starting from the composer's first album, the series of Manfred Eicher's company encompasses all first recordings of Arvo Pärt's most significant works that during more than 30 years have found acknowledgement and numerous listeners all over the world.

'Tabula Rasa' has remained one of the most sought after among other recordings.

A voluminous book, containing among other things the copy of manuscripts of 'Tabula Rasa' and 'Cantus' was released in September 2010 as a special edition of the recording that celebrates the composer's 75th birthday.

'Tabula Rasa' was voted the best Estonian classical music disc of all times by experts and amateurs in the poll organised by the Estonian classical music radio station Klassikaraadio.
