Cyrillus Kreek's Days: Ensemble Strand...Rand

Sofia Joons vocal, violin, Hiiu zither, bowed psaltery

Robert Jürjendal guitar

Mall Ney harmonium

Strand...Rand takes the audience to the world of folk chorals, songs and instrumentals of Estonian-Swedish islands and areas. Some of the chorals were collected by composer Cyrillus Kreek. Peeking into the past, we have unexpectedly discovered beautiful, joyful and even terrible musical pieces and revived them. Secular and religious, sacred and human all at the same time they enable to fuse our mundane life with the eternal, again and again – as befits a mighty world music tradition.

ELLER 125: Heino Eller's complete quartet works in two evenings

Tallinn String Quartet:

Urmas Vulp (violin)

Olga Voronova (violin)

Toomas Nestor (viola)

Levi-Danel Mägila (cello)

Heino Eller

String quartet no 2 in F minor

Four pieces for a string quartet

String quartet no 3 in B major

Native folk tune

The performance of Tallinn String Quartet is an overview of all Heino Eller's quartet compositions. The five string quartets belong to the most significant and valuable works of Estonian chamber music and illustrate the cross-section of many-faceted personality of their creator. The two former for the first time introduced numerous principles and mediums of the 20th century composition technique into Estonian chamber music; the following works reveal the composer's search for inspiration in folklore sources. The fifth, considered to be one of Heino Eller's last major compositions, displays his shift to a psychologically profound style. The cyclic grand works are balanced by the miniatures – quartet arrangements of piano or violin pieces.

ELLER 125: Heino Eller's three symphonies

Estonian State Symphony Orchestra

conductor Tõnu Kaljuste

Heino Eller's symphony music occupies a special place among his mostly instrumental works. The symphonic poem 'Dawn' and music piece 'Native folk tune' have become symbols of Estonian national idea. Among the works, slightly overshadowed by other more often performed short symphonic creations, is one of Heino Eller's central pieces created at the end of the second work period – the epical-lyrical 1st symphony subtitled 'In modo mixolydio' (1936). In addition to that, the 2nd symphony, unfinished due to circumstances and whose single completed 1st part (1948) was never performed during the composer's life. The works also include the main piece of the later period, the dramatic monumental 3rd symphony (1961). Tõnu Kaljuste will evoke the sound of the master creations in one concert.

The performance is recordered by ETV.

Created in 1926 Estonian State Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) has grown from a small radio music band into an Estonian representative orchestra. ERSO through the decades belonged to the top orchestras of the Soviet Union and has during the last decade expanded its international scope with award-winning recordings and successful overseas performances.

One of the most significant among the latter was the American tour in 2009 (conductors Nikolai Aleksejev and Eri Klas). The Orchestra earlier visited many European countries, Kuwait, Canada and the former Soviet Union. It participated in Estonian and international music festivals, such as The Baltic Sea Festival, Yehudi Menuhin Festival Gstaad Musiksommer in Switzerland, Europamusicale in München and others. The high quality of ERSO's recordings has been recognized in prestigeous classical music magazines and acknowledged by significant awards crowned by the 2004 Grammy. The orchestra's recording of Frank Martin's oratory 'Golgotha' was also nominated for Grammy in 2010. The Orchestra's chief conductors were Olav Roots, Roman Matsov, Neeme Järvi, Peeter Lilje, Leo Krämer, Arvo Volmer and Nikolai Aleksejev. Its present music director is Neeme Järvi, artistic advisor's duties are performed by Paavo Järvi and the first guest conductor is Olari Elts.

Author and narrator Indrek Hirv

Heino Eller – Rain Simmul (Tallinn City Theatre)

Anna Eller – Liisa Hirsch (piano)

Premiere April 16th 2007 in Tallinn City Theatre during Days of Estonian Music

The (mono)play 'The Bells of St Paul's' created by poet Indrek Hirv is a story of becoming an artist and about the possibility of national art without pathos and politics. It is a story of Heino Eller's memories of the early childhood – the flooded meadows at the Emajõgi river, father's strictness, feeling of injustice, free water flow as an intimate experience; his love for a foreigner and an older motherly woman expressed through the nostalgic Nordic music; and an insight into the perfection in art – his contact with an entirely new logic of the most modern music of the time in Zürich.

Premiere April 20th 2011 in Turku Cathedral

The internationally acknowledged Finnish Dance Theatre ERI has been inspired by the theme of the Last Supper to create an illustration of the Passion of Christ. Arvo Pärt's religious musical pieces 'Mein Weg', 'Da pacem Domine', 'In principio', 'Festina Lente', 'Cantus' and 'Passio', Tiina Lindfors's choreography and Esa Kyllönen's light art create a unique dancing performance premiered in April 2011 in Turku Cathedral in the program of Turku European Capital 2011.

'My aim is to connect Easter events, including Jesus Christ's life story, the young prophet's goal and dimension which we became aware of in connection with his death to the present moment. Crucification was the revenge of midgets fearing to lose their power and at the same time the triumph of humankind through the tragic sacrifice. I have intentionally avoided the realistic linear approach to Easter events and headed for a more spiritual and symbolic handling as symbols tell the story better than tangible signs. Despite my emphasis on the enigmatic and sacred immaterial consciousness without connecting the action to certain persons, the story still remains clear.'

Tiina Lindfors

The show is included into the program on Arvo Pärt's advice.

Tiina Lindfors is one of the founding members of Dance Theatre ERI, who has created choreography for 77 performances. She enjoys working with composers and orchestras, creating five major dance shows in cooperation with composer Mikko Heiniö. Lindfors's eleven choreographies were made for television and many of them presented Finland at the 'Prix Italia' and 'Golden Prague' competitions. She performs and her works have been demonstrated in Scandinavian and European countries as well as in Asia, America, and Africa – about 300 guest performances in 25 countries. Tiina Lindfors has received numerous accolades: Finnish Cultural Foundation Prize (1999), Swedish Cultural Foundation Prize (2005), Villa Karo bronze sculpture (2011), Pro Dance Award (1987) and Finnish Award (1995) as well as prizes received for work with Dance Theatre ERI.

'I have always been guided by texts especially intimate to me and carrying an existential meaning. This is the root reaching especially deep which, however, lifts me higher – it is basically the fruit that has been nurturing the world for centuries. Looking at the two milleniums, we realize that people have little changed - that is why I consider the sacred texts very topical. From this point of view, there is no major difference between yesterday, today or tomorrow as there are always eternal verities.' Arvo Pärt

On Arvo Pärt's birthday Nargenfestival performs the works, most of which are released in September on the ECM personal recording.

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir has become one of the highly acknowledged Estonian musical groups in the world. It was established in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste, who was its music director and chief conductor for two decades. His work was continued in 2001-2007 by British musician Paul Hillier. Since the 2008-2009 season the music director and chief conductor has been Daniel Reuss. During a season the Choir gives about 60-70 concerts both at home and abroad and does recordings, which have earned many accolades including Grammy for 'Arvo Pärt. Da Pacem' (Harmonia Mundi, 2006, conductor Paul Hillier). This season celebrates the Choir's 30th year of work. Their program includes music of Pärt, Mozart, Tanejev, Bach and others performed with conductors Daniel Reuss, Tõnu Kaljuste, Gregory Rose, Marc Minkowski. In addition to home performances the Choir gives concerts in Germany, France, Austria, Norway, Holland, Portugal and other countries.

In 1989 professor Jüri Gerretz founded a string orchestra with Tallinn Conservatory students whose core became the basis for Tallinn Chamber Orchestra set up by Tõnu Kaljuste in April 1993. During the years he has united the activities of the Orchestra and the internationally acknowledged Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, making this the beginning of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra's official work. It has performed at numerous prestigeous music festivals and repeatedly toured in the USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries. The Orchestra has been conducted by Juha Kangas, John Storgårds, Pietari Inkinen and Jaakko Kuusisto from Finland, Richard Tognetti from Australia, Terje Tonnesen from Norway, Valentin Žuk and Daniel Raiskin from Holland, and Samuel Wong from Canada not to mention Estonian conductors. In 1993-1995 and 1996/97-2000/2001 the chief conductor of the Orchestra was Tõnu Kaljuste; during the 1995/96 season Juha Kangas performed the duties of the chief conductor, becoming its artistic advisor in 2001-2003. At present the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra activities are supervised by the music director of Tallinn Philharmonic Society, Eri Klas.
