Uniko, the joint work of two Finnish musicians, accordion virtuoso Kimmo Pohjonen and his long-time creative partner Samuli Kosminen, commissioned by the renowned Kronos Quartet, was written in 2004. It is a piece for vocals, accordion, string quartet, and electronics, in which the sounds produced by the vocals and the five instruments grow into a powerful orchestral sound with samples, electric drums, and electronic manipulations. There is also room for improvisation in their composed music. The title refers to the dreaminess and hypnotic nature of the music. According to Pohjonen, this piece is about dreams and life. The composer has pursued the idea of diving into the music, closing his eyes, going somewhere very deep, and losing himself in it. ‘When you’re dreaming, and you’re unconscious, you still know where you are. And then you wake up but you’re still in your dream.’
