CYRILLUS KREEK DAYS 2019: CYRILLUS KREEK AND ORTHODOX

CYRILLUS KREEK DAYS 2019 in Haapsalu, on Hiiumaa and Saaremaa islands

This is already the 13th Cyrillus Kreek's Days in Nargenfestival, heralding the beginning of summer, keeping alive the works of the prominent Estonian composer for his hometown's people and searching for a novel perspective for his rich musical heritage. This summer Kreek's music will also reach Saaremaa and Hiiumaa people. In Haapsalu and on Hiiumaa and Saaremaa islands we present six concerts with two different programmes: ensemble Heinavanker, performing Kreek's Orthodox church songs in Estonian, and folk singers Meelika Hainsoo, Celia Roose and Lauri Õunapuu singing their arrangements of folk songs from both Kreek's collection as well as from village people of his time. The art director of Cyrillus Kreek's Days isTõnu Kaljuste.

CYRILLUS KREEK AND ORTHODOX

Evening service

Ensemble Heinavanker

Ensemble Heinavanker ('hay wagon') is a unique meeting point for a friends' group who have been singing together for almost all their lives. Under composer Margo Kõlar the musicians explore the rich heritage of early church music, uniting ancestors' traditions with modern time's dreams. A prominent place in Heinavanker's repertoire belongs to Estonian folk chants, acient regi songs as well as Estonian modern authors' works. As the singers from a century ago handled the melodies creatively, so does Heinavaker, trying to keep their arrangements alive and developing. The ensemble's focus at Cyrillus Kreek's Days concerts is on the songs of evening service in Orthodox church, collected by the composer.
